Abstract

Whenever you hear the word coke, a name that strikes to your mind would definitely be Coca Cola you cannot think of any substitute. But have you ever thought how it originated or simply came into to being to entice your taste buds. The following essay will provide you with its complete history and evolution.

The Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia in May, 1886. John Pemberton invented the Coca Cola formula in a three legged brass kettle in his backyard. The idea to name the formula as Coca Cola was a suggestion given by John Pemberton’s bookkeeper Frank Robinson. The name Coca-Cola is a combination of the names of two ingredients, the coca leaf from South America and the kola nut from Africa.  (Roger T.)

The Birth of Coca Cola / Selling of the formula

  1. Frank Robinson being a bookkeeper was not only a vision thinker but also had excellent penmanship. It was he who first scripted “Coca Cola” into the flowing letters and gave a face to the formula. The face of the formula is now a famous logo today.
  2. The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886 as a medicine which hallucinated people.
  3. About nine servings of the soft drink were sold each day. Sales for that first year added up to a total of about $50. The first year of sales was a loss to John Pemberton because it cost him over $70 in expanses. The reason was that many people thought it a medicine and so avoided its usage.
  4. Until 1905, the soft drink, marketed as a tonic, contained extracts of cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola nut. Thus aimed to change its perception as a medicine to tonic.

Role of Asa Candler

In 1887, another Atlanta pharmacist and businessman, Asa Candler bought the formula for Coca Cola from inventor John Pemberton for $2,300. By the late 1890s, Coca Cola was one of America’s most popular fountain drinks, largely due to Candler’s aggressive marketing of the product and whole hearted acceptance of the product by huge population. With Asa Candler, now at the tiller, the Coca Cola Company increased sales by over 4000% between 1890 and 1900. Moreover, advertising was an important factor in John Pemberton and Asa Candler’s success and by the turn of the century, the drink was sold across the United States and Canada. This was because they worked on the advertising and specifically on word of mouth marketing. As people would go and tell others about the product. Around the same time, the company began to earn from a second source i.e. by selling the beverage to independent bottling companies licensed to sell the drink. Even today, the US soft drink industry is organized on this principle. (Christopher P.)

Death of the Soda Fountain – Rise of the Bottling Industry

Until the 1960s, both small town and big city inhabitants and residents enjoyed carbonated beverages at the local soda fountain or ice cream saloon which were often housed in the drug store, the soda fountain counter served as a meeting place for people of all ages. But due to increase in popularity of bottled soft drinks, and fast food restaurants, the soda fountain declined in popularity as people now can enjoy their carbonated beverage anywhere they want to as it was available in bottles.

New Coke

On April 23, 1985, the trade secret “New Coke” formula was released. The New Coke was introduced with modifications not only in the formula but also in the bottles’ appearance. Today, products of the Coca Cola Company are consumed at the rate of more than one billion drinks per day all over the world. (Franklin M.)
